Lab 1-
LM311 comparators and oscillators
The purpose of this lab is to build and
observe the LM311 chip. As well to learn how a comparator works. The LM311 comparator
in section A was the most basic component set up. Slew rates, settling time,
bandwidth and 3dB point of the chip were measured. Secondly a Schmitt trigger was
built with the comparator by using positive feedback. The trigger alternated
between high and low voltages based on a threshold voltage, and the difference
between the high and low voltage thresholds is the hysteresis voltage. By using
both positive and the negative feedback along with a capacitor, a RC
oscillating circuit or multi-vibrator was created and tested as well. The
circuit generated a range of frequencies, all proportional to the RC constant.
Finally a Triangle Wave generator that we designed was also made and tested.
Lab 2 -
Applications of the 555
timer
This lab looks at 555 timer chips and their varied uses as pulse generators, oscillators, or saw tooth wave generators. Also a brief look at photo resistors and their potential. In section A pulses are triggered and observed based on RC components, while also looking at the RESET function of the chip. Section B an oscillator using the chip was made and specific resistors created certain frequencies. In section C the resistors were replaced with photo resistors and the varying currents output effect was observed. The final section D is a look at saw tooth generation by the timer and transistor logic set up.
